Transits are by far the easiest astrological forecasting technique to use. Anyone who knows the degree/minute of their natal planets can at once – with access to an ephemeris like Raphael’s – see how the heavens are affecting their daily lives. If, for example, your natal Sun is at 15 degrees Scorpio and Saturn is at that same degree of zodiac in the sky today, transiting Saturn is conjunct your sun. It’s as simple as that. Of course, the effects of slower moving planets (from Saturn to Pluto) are more intense and (obviously) longer lasting. They are the more powerful forces that bring about change in your life, often peaking on days which coincide with inner planet transits – the sun and Mars often acting as a trigger.
The influences of the inner, faster moving planets (the Sun to Mars) are themselves quite fleeting, and I will be omitting Moon and Mercury transits altogether as their effects are too short lived, and in some cases unnoticeable. (They are important, however, in techniques like Progressions and Solar Returns. You’ll also note I haven’t used the sextile in the interpretations, an aspect which I consider rather weak.) Use this Raphael’s Planetary Transit Guide to see what astral forces you may have to deal with, when it may be a good time to forge ahead with plans, take major decisions, look within, meet new people, or perhaps just stay at home!
SUN CONJUNCT SATURN
Your ‘will to be’, originality and self confidence is affected today – your ego, for example, may end up taking a serious knock. Plus, this transit tends to slow you down, as energy levels are not necessarily high and plentiful. In fact, its energies should be channelled into being useful and industrious. Though this may be a good time for getting things done, keep goals in proper focus and retain some patience! If you stick to major commitments and discipline your energies you can actually gain quite a bit of satisfaction.
Even so you may be much better off quietly getting on with your duties today now: here is where your real focus is – fulfilling obligations and responsibilities to others You may benefit from work performed ‘behind , the scenes’ where you can remain undisturbed or through manual labour (which doesn’t requite much theorising or creativity) But at least you should be both realistic and practical in your estimation of what can be done today.
SUN SQUARE SATURN
The sun gives you your ‘reason to be’; Saturn your reason to create order and discipline. If you’re not usually a very practical, well-organised type then you may experience difficulties today – as the sun and Saturn are essentially in conflict. If all you’re expecting today is pleasure and satisfaction you may be disappointed – duties and obligations may rear their head and require attention. It may feel simply as if something is taking the fun out of life – and this may well be true. (At least it’s only a 24 hour transit!)
Today you may feel somewhat less vital than usual – again, it’s not your luckiest time and you may suffer from a lack of confidence about things in general, especially yourself. This could even be a low point when the normal way of getting things done is not available to you. It’s best to keep your expectations simple and not to overreact to frustrations and defeats – for these may arise today in just about any department of your life. But if setbacks do occur, this is a sign that whatever isn’t working out in your life should be abandoned. Consider whether or not you should scrap certain projects or plans – you may be wasting your time.
SUN TRINE SATURN
Energy levels are reasonably high at this time and if you give tasks your all now, you can look forward to considerable success. It’s a good time to review how far you’ve come with any recent projects – whatever changes are necessary can (and should) be made today, if possible. You will proceed at objectives with a realistic frame of mind, and so keep on target and schedule with your goals.
You may even find that much is going your way at work as you seek to accomplish your objectives. Though you’re not afraid of hard work, a low profile task might suit you best, one where you can be your own boss, get organised and patiently get on with your schedule. Overall, the work-life balance may well be evenly weighted at this time – you can enjoy the fact that you are organised and accomplishing tasks satisfactorily.
SUN OPPOSITE SATURN
A day when you feel rather uninspired, to say the least – this is because there’s a conflict between your need for self expression – to be yourself – so to speak, and the need to fulfil your everyday responsibilities. In the practical world you may be fighting to keep career matters on track, and since vitality is in short supply you may be running on empty. This can make work and responsibilities seem particularly onerous today. However – the time is ripe to slow down and take stock of things. But do be realistic!
You may not be able to attend to personal desires or ambitions, and someone ‘higher up’ in authority may oppose you for one reason or another. (Saturn rules those in power over you.) Perhaps you have to play by someone else’s rules at this time, but the best thing is to rein in any resentments you may have and get on with whatever is necessary. A personal relationship also may put you under a fair amount of stress, when you must call on your energy reserves (and patience) to get through it. Be honest with others and try to find some mid-ground where you can compromise and stay on good terms. On the whole, if you can remain detached and objective this transit can be seen as a test of strength to see how well you cope under pressure.
SUN CONJUNCT URANUS
The keynote with this combination is personal freedom and how you both seek it and express it – it is the urge to express yourself as freely as possible. Thus, you may feel stifled if you have onerous duties to fulfil but this transit could give you a sense of the spontaneous, and an ability to inspire and enliven others. You are hardly in a mood to let others slow you down or stand in your way – this combination of energies does not make room for others’ energies (as would Venus or the moon) and you need simply to be yourself right now,
If you recognise fully now the extent to which you are tired of old routines, you can do something about it. Whatever you can incorporate into your life that is brand new should feel exciting – let it happen and let it give your life new meaning. If, on the other hand, you notice nothing at all, perhaps you’re really not in touch with this transit. It could then be that its effects are externalised out into the environment and you meet with sudden, unexpected setbacks where little seems to go as expected. Or it might be that your own behaviour is unexpected to others, as you assert your freedom of expression. Be aware that others may even find you a little shocking or eccentric!
SUN SQUARE URANUS
Today you tend be rather restless and impulsive, and it’s an impulse for something new and untried. You need to really get in touch with this impulse towards change or there maybe consequences that (at best) could be called inconvenient. What is really happening internally is the need to break up old patterns of living, stale habits and anything that does not make you feel truly alive. Uranus is about vivification, whatever animates and invigorates you.
The Uranian energy that is trying to create a powerful sense of freedom within you – one could call this a spiritual energy, even – cannot be contained very easily. This is why (as with the conjunction) you need to be very open to change in your everyday routine. There is much wisdom in the advice to ‘go with the flow’ and this is exactly what you should bear in mind if there are events you now find disruptive. Try not to have rigid plans that must work today -be flexible and open to the new. Perhaps, even, you should deliberately instigate change or look towards new ways of doing things.
SUN TRINE URANUS
This transit may prove to be a splendid opportunity to express yourself in a unique, original way. Uranus is all about the spirit of freedom, that which drives you truly be yourself. In this sense it is like a higher ‘octave’ of the sun, but it works in a much more immediate and even powerful way. It is the energy for change, vitality and ‘newness’ – whether ideas or situations in your environment. All of this can be accomplished in a straightforward way with this transit – in other words, instigating change can be much easier now. It may also be easier to see just what it is about yourself that normally holds you back. Thus you can do something about it.
You may have insights or breakthroughs. But remember, nothing in the material world ever happens by itself, and so this is not a day to sit around waiting for things to happen. You may now receive inspirational ideas apparently from nowhere, though. In reality, they are coming from your unconscious and you are in a heightened state of awareness – another Uranian effect. Thus you can more easily pick up on these good ideas – see if you can’t put them swiftly into action.
SUN OPPOSITE URANUS
This transit represents a kind of intensification of the conjunction, and one where its energies are less internalised. You will soon realise this, in any case, if there are sudden and upsetting events which represent a dislocation in your normal routine. These will appear to come from ‘without’ but only because you are projecting that energy. Try to meet any changes of direction forced on you in a positive way and don’t blame circumstances for any setbacks.
The Sun symbolises your ego-self, that which you seek to impress upon the world and Uranus can aptly be called The Awakener (this is also why it’s a ‘higher’ planet than the sun) and ‘awakening’ is just what you might receive in personal relationships at this time when you try to assert yourself. The awakening may be a rude one, or it may take the form of an inspired encounter, but any sudden change that occurs today will see other people (friends, employers, partners) as the agent for such changes. At least relationships shouldn’t be boring, therefore!
