‘A physician without knowledge of astrology will not rightly be able to call himself a physician ’ ~ Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine
Astrology has a very strong connection historically to medicine and healing traditions, with the mind, body and soul all seen as important and undivided facets of the same being. Doctors used the four classical humours to diagnose, separating diseases into those that fell under phlegmatic, melancholic, choleric and sanguine temperaments within the patient.
The elemental balance within the natal chart was also evaluated by adding up the visible planets in each element (earth, air, fire or water), as well as the ascendant and midheaven. Which element shows up strongly or hardly shows up at all?
Modern Western astrologers will often look at the transits, progressions and solar arcs leading up to the onset of the illness in order to assess what physical and emotional cause the illness might have been born from or what it is likely to be, reading the narrative from the symbolism of the planetary signs, significators and houses.
Casting a decumbiture chart for the time when you first consult with the client (or the time when they first lay down ill according to your method), you are likely to see the next phases, turning points and outcome of the illness by following the transiting lunar aspects (for acute illness), especially at 45° degree stages, or the Sun (for chronic ailments) through the consultation chart for the time of assessment.
1st House – The physical body, vitality & health, the environment, the early childhood and birth, physical deformities. Planets and their aspects in the 1st house are vital. The sign on the cusp of the 1st house shows what type of constitution you are likely to have and how immune you are to illness due to the strength of your physical and emotional boundaries
2nd House – Look here for additional insights into eating habits, for example the south node in the 2nd house often shows poor quality of food and unconscious eating patterns
4th House – Genetic hereditary issues, emotional repression leading to physical illness
6th House – Shows what type of illnesses or ailments the person is likely to suffer from (with transits showing activation periods) or what poor health habits they may have. Shows physical and mental health issues. Look at the sign on the cusp of the 6th house, the ruler of the 6th (sign, house placement and aspects) and any planets in the 6th
8th House – Chronic, longstanding ailments and surgery, death
12 House – Psychic disturbances, interference from the spirit world, karmic issues, self-sabotage and unconscious emotional or mental health issues, general ill health
The Sun and Moon are very important as health indicators (as are all planets), but also focus on the Saturn sign and aspects. Saturn through the signs points to your physical limitation or restriction, i.e. Saturn in Leo shows heart, blood, back or spine problems. Saturn shows you what exactly is blocked in your body.
A stellium of planets in a sign will most likely point to a weakness in the physical body in the area which that sign rules. A tendency to what type of illness does the chart show? For example Pisces could be prone to allergies, a lowered immune system, difficulties with emotional expression (excess water) or addiction.
Each zodiac sign rules certain body parts & areas which show possible health issues when these show up as relevant significators in the chart.
